When thinking about privacy and surveillance, I refer to Michel Foucault’s theories of Discipline and Punishment, particularly as they relate to carcerality. Carceral logic, as understood through Foucault, is the apparatus that aims to surveil, control, and punish individuals for the ways in which they disobey and deviate from “normality.” This framework—discipline and punishment, particularly incarceration, as a means of exerting control—is exercised heavily by the state in all acts of surveillance, from “authoritarian” efforts to contact trace citizens with regard to pandemic exposure, to predictive policing and anti-terrorist programs. While I have particular thoughts with regard to COVID surveillance and the necessity for rigorous and thorough protocols to contain and diminish exposure, I find the logic behind surveilling citizens and individuals to be endemic to the larger plague of carcerality in the United States. As Jathan Sadowski mentions in The Authoritarian Trade-Off, the burden of reducing exposure, of reducing crime, and terrorism should fall upon those who have constructed the strictures of “normality.”

Yet, still, there will always be divergence from "normality"

Thinking in terms of Foucault feels productive in the sense that a sentiment I have for peaceful transformative healing has been cosigned by a well-respected white philosopher—still, without discipline and systems of control, how might we prevent violence and hate? But also, does the current system really prevent violence and hate?
